Ukama Community Foundation was set up to uplift and brighten the lives of township kids in Western Cape, South Africa. It supports children in impoverished townships where there is an extremely high unemployment rate, extreme poverty and gangsterism is rife. These children rely on school as their main source of nutrition and safety.

Ukama Community Foundation supplies over 700 children from these townships with two hot meals a day, learning support and other essential items.

The Foundation is part of Ukama, a social enterprise helping women from disadvantaged communities establish microenterprises providing contract packing to small businesses. They hand pack the popular bags of Barrett’s Ridge Beer Bread which are imported and marketed in the UK by True Origin, a fair trade food importer based in Paisley.

Ukama is a Shona word meaning ‘we are related’ or ‘we are family’ . It is a word which encompasses Ukama’s inclusive philosophy.
